Reading this article, you’ll learn about:
1. LII’s dependence on OS and Screen Resolution.
2. CPU and GPU overclocking: FPS increase.
3. Multicore CPU: FPS increase.
1. LII’s dependence on OS and Screen Resolution.
Testing system:
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (2400Mhz)
Liquid Cooling System: IceHammer IH-NIAGARA FALL
Mainboard: Abit IP35
RAM: 2*2Gb DDR2-800 Corsair XMS2 (5-5-5-15)
Video: Nvidia GeForce 9800GTX 512Mb Zotac
HDD1: 500Gb Maxtor STM3500320AS Max22 32Mb Cache
HDD2: 120Gb Seagate ST3120026AS Barracuda 7200.7
Sound: Realtek HD Integrated
Monitor: 22" ViewSonic VG2230wm
Game client - Lineage II: 2nd Throne - Gracia Part 1
So, it was rather hard to choose the method of testing and finally, I decided to record a replay with loaded location and use it in my test. This way allows appraise performance and not to worry about such factors, as, e.g, if location is already loaded or not. For measuring FPS rate I used Fraps (2.9.4) and it’s built-in benchmark, which shows maximal, minimal and average result of FPS.
(My settings during the test, with muted sound)
We have 5 OS: Windows XP 32bit SP2, Windows XP 32bit SP3, Windows XP 64bit SP2, Windows Vista 64bit SP1 and a special tweaked-pack of XP 32bit SP2 (by VXK, 0.9.7), which I used sometimes – 210 Mb and installed only for 7-10 minutes. Let’s call it XP32 Game.
Here we have diagram with result’s:
(1024х768 resolution was rather popular among players)
(1280х1024 resolution is used by majority of players nowadays)
(1680х1050 resolution, wide one)
Graph shows us, Vista x64 is obvious outsider in all resolutions, like XP x64 (I think it’s because of Windows-on-Windows 64-bit core, which tries to emulate work of 32-bit applications, using 64-bit OS).
And tweaked-pack, XP32 Game, indicates best results (leaves behind Windows Vista x64 with +13% and XP x64 with +7%).
If you have more, than 3.25Gb RAM, the best choice is XP x64, otherwise - XP32 SP3 (faster than SP2 for 6%).
Now, let’s compare resolutions and FPS rate. Should you reduce it for better performance during sieges? Look at diagram.
(FPS dependence on resolution)
My conclusion – resolution doesn’t have an influence on system performance.
2. CPU and Video overclocking: FPS increase.
Testing overcloking’s increase, was choused rather liberal rate, which I could reach using quite good air cooling. 3600Mhz – it’s 50% increase of the nominal rates.
FSB - 1600Mhz (400Mhz), CPU and RAM voltage was raised to 1,515 and 2,100. PCI-E frequency way fixed to 100Mhz. WinXP x64 SP2 as OS. Using this rates, computer counts pi (million digits decimal) for 14 seconds.
(CPU-Z & GPU-Z)

(Temperature after Lineage II)
Let’s check the result and compare FPS with nominal CPU rate (2400Mhz) and overclocked (3600Mhz), 1024x768 and 1280х1024 resolutions, same settings as for first benchmark.
Omg! Lineage becomes practically gameable at most complicated moods. Let’s count:
Maximal FPS: +34% with 74 per second.
Minimum FPS: +50% with 21 per second (like CPU overcklocking :))
Average FPS: +38%.
As for my own impression, using nominal rates, FPS results were really bad and there could be no doubt – you just can’t get pleasure for gaming this way. On the contrary, with overcklocked rates I noticed the only freeze during the most difficult scene in the replay (btw, with 4Gz I hadn’t that freeze at all! :)).
As for Video-Card, I overclocked it for 10% (740Mhz for GPU and 1200Mhz for Memory) and… had no difference in FPS o.O So I don’t put results here.
Let’s resume the second part. CPU overclocking is really very important and gives a good percent to performance. On the other part, this doesn’t work with Video-card.
3. Multicore CPU: FPS increase.
In progress.
If you want to compare your own results and author’s, download this replay:

You should play it before twice – Lineage will boot all models and textures to memory.
The replay lasts for 1:20 minute. Use these settings for FRAPS:
Start you benchmark at the 40th second – so all characters at Giran will be already loaded. After benchmark you will see a txt-file with values.
