So why should the non-competitive player care? Because it's in these "amateur" or "starter" tournaments where you will find those builds and successful tactics being created for the masses, tested and confirmed as a good or bad build. (PvX wiki anyone?)
The argument of players being "skilled" or not within a month is irrelevant. Tournaments such as ours (and other popular venues) will give you a glimpse into the development of the meta-game as it unfolds from launch. Observer mode obviously helps with that. If you honestly think it will take an entire month (or more?) for members of any competitive guild to decide "we are ready to play competitively now" you are wrong, and clearly have not been part of a fun and great scene known as professional e-sports.
There's nothing wrong with that, but keep an open mind please, and understand that *some* people are playing this game for the competition and PvP nearly exclusively. Part of the development process of developing new builds/defining "skill" is the tournament/competitive match phase. You need to test them against organized and persistent opponents that have something to gain by winning.
I am by no means the expert on the subject, just stating my opinion from experience in the SC2 TeamLiquid scene. If you have no interest in it, then that's respected as well. We're all here to give our opinion and attempt to better the game.
But back to the main point, if they plan on giving e-sports a good shot, they need to give it 100% or not bother with it. It's bad enough GvG is a no-go. Anyone from QQ or TL can tell you why that wasn't a popular decision. GvG was everything in GW1 for the most part. That's going off-tangent though.
I respect ArenaNet for everything they're standing for, and will support them in either case. In reality, we might find that when the game releases, observer functions will already be in, and this entire thread will be null and void.
TL:dr, observer mode is needed for proper tournament play, proper tournament play is needed for proper development of builds and meta-game, and without that, the process becomes sloppy. Tournaments will be hosted early on, even in beta. In the end, thats what qualifiers are for, to weed out the idiots, and show only the best of the best. End result? An informative, educational, interesting set of matches to watch.
Inquiry:
How hard do you think it is to code in an "observer" mode in their game engine? I'm not completely familiar with their technology, but I can't imagine its something that would take a long time. Keep that in mind.
