Massively Multiplayer Online и multiplayer session-based action
A
massively multiplayer online game (also called
MMO and
MMOG) is a
multiplayer video game which is capable of supporting hundreds or thousands of players simultaneously. By necessity, they are played on the
Internet, and feature at least one
persistent world. They are, however, not necessarily games played on
personal computers. Most of the newer game consoles, including the
PSP,
PlayStation 3,
Xbox 360,
Nintendo DS,
PS Vita and
Wii can access the Internet and may therefore run MMO games. Additionally, mobile devices and smartphones based on such operating systems as
Android,
iOS and
Windows Phone are seeing an increase in the number of MMO games available.
MMOGs can enable players to cooperate and compete with each other on a large scale, and sometimes to interact meaningfully with people around the world. They include a variety of gameplay types, representing many
video game genres.
A
multiplayer online game is a
multiplayer video game which can be played via a
game server over the
internet, with other players around the world. Some prominent examples of this include
fighting games such as
Street Fighter IV and
Marvel vs. Capcom 3,
sports games such as
NBA 2K11,
strategy video games such as
Warcraft 3 and
StarCraft, older online games such as the
Sega Meganet titles, and particularly
first-person shooters such as
Battlefield 2,
Halo 3,
Counter-Strike,
Quake 3,
Team Fortress 2 and
Call of Duty: Black Ops.
These games differ from
MMOGs in that they do not create a
persistent world, but create a playing arena for the purpose of a single game or
round. In other words, they rely on a game listen server used only for that round, and there can be numerous servers all around the world.
MMOGs on the other hand, rely on
dedicated servers, as these games must be running continuously.
